Commercial Objective I founded Computerwise in 1996 with a core focus of the supply of computer hardware to local councils and authorities throughout the UK. This incorporated the supply of computers, component upgrades and software licensing. Funding/Investment No start-up capital was required and no lending was used with the company being developed organically from income generated. Competition We rigidly stuck to our core business of smaller more varied requirements as any substantial supply contracts were generally swallowed up by the likes of Computacenter or SCC Operations As 1996 was pre-internet sales campaigns consisted of telesales, mailshots and fax broadcasting of exclusive offers. Personal visits were also used for higher values orders. We also published a full colour catalogue which was distributed to both customers and leads and help us build up brand awareness. I saw the potential of the internet so developed a fully transactional online shop which completed successful beta testing. USP 1. Longer opening times. 2. Quotes were returned within 60 mins. 3. Realistic margins sought. Additional Revenues In 1997 I implemented a number of staff computer purchasing schemes at Microsoft, Oracle, Carphone Warehouse & Mars. The scheme provided the companies staff with the ability to purchase the latest model computer at a price cheaper than available in the High Street. Whilst margins were tight this project was a success and generated good revenues. Performance Over a period of 3 years I grew the business from just myself to 6 staff and 62 regular customers. The company generated a net income of £127k on revenues of £1.2m in its 2nd year. My role as CEO included: - Identifying the opportunity. - Creating the business and commercial plan. - Developing from scratch a loyal customer base. - Recruiting and managing a team of 6 staff. - Developing additional revenue schemes outside the core business. Exit In early 1999 I sold the business to a trade partner. |
